Bristol, Simsbury Senior Legion teams continue to battle for second in Zone 1

NOTE: There are no byes in the 2018 19U state tournament. Thirty-two teams make it, and all 32 play in the first round. Thank you to Bristol general manager Paul LaFleur for the correction.

The Bristol and Simsbury Senior American Legion teams may see their battle for second place in Zone 1 come down to the final doubleheader of the regular season this coming Sunday at Muzzy Field.

It’s possible, but there is a lot of baseball left to be played for both teams. Both teams are 8-4 in Zone 1, 3.5 games behind first place Avon (12-1). Simsbury has seven zone games left to play and one suspended zone game to complete. Bristol has seven zone games left. Each side will be looking to hold off Winsted, which is in fourth place in the zone at 8-5.

Bristol and Simsbury split their games on Sunday at Simsbury’s Memorial Field, though the first one was not even a half inning long. In a continuation of a suspended game from June 18, Simsbury claimed a 4-3 walk-off win in 10 innings.

Bristol bounced back with a 7-4 victory in the full game that was played afterward. Post 2 broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, then added three more in the sixth for a 7-2 advantage. Simsbury got to within 7-4 in the sixth, but Zach Marquis and Bristol shut down the hosts from there and claimed the win. Kenny Knox, Jr., pitched the first five innings and took the win, and Marquis recorded a save.

Bristol begins the busy stretch run on Tuesday at Wolcott at 5:30 p.m.
