Rain halts Bristol-Simsbury battle for first in Zone 1

The Bristol and Simsbury senior American Legion baseball teams hooked up in a duel for first place in Zone 1 on Monday evening at Simsbury’s Memorial Field.

The only thing that could stop these two undefeated teams, other than shaky defense, was the weather. The game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the ninth inning tied at 3-3, no outs and a 3-0 count on Simsbury’s Sam Attianese. Post 84 now has two suspended games to complete. Simsbury played Avon on June 13 at Buckingham Field in Avon, and the game was suspended after 10 innings in a scoreless tie. The Bristol-Simsbury game will need to be completed on a future date. The teams aren’t scheduled to play each other again until July 8 in Simsbury.

Bristol and Simsbury, each 3-0-1 each scored a run in the top of the first inning. Post 2 got its run off of starter Nate Langmeier while Post 84 picked up one off of Zach Marquis. Simsbury took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Bristol used small ball to score twice and take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. Post 84 got a run back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

Marquis pitched the first six innings for Bristol and gave up three runs. Ethan Ryan came on in relief of Marquis in the seventh and tossed a pair of scoreless frames.

Langmeier also went the first six innings for Simsbury, and gave up three runs. Aidan Walsh came on for a third of an inning in the top of the seventh, then was replaced by Luke Benneche. Benneche threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

As mentioned before, the defenses were shaky on Monday. Simsbury had five errors while Bristol made three.

Post 2 plays a Zone 1 game at Plainville today at 5:30 p.m.
