HIGH 5 OF THE WEEK: Kilmer earns top NEC field athlete honor

Jill Kilmer found her niche in track and field in the heptathlon while competing for St. Paul Catholic. She was a standout competitor for the Falcons in the heptathlon, and now she’s doing the same at Sacred Heart University.

Kilmer was named Northeast Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career after a great effort at the Mount Multis heptathlon, which was held at Mount Saint Mary’s University. Kilmer, a junior at SHU, was the top college finisher in the heptathlon with 4,700 points. The 4,700 points are a personal-best for Kilmer and put her fourth all-time in SHU history in the event. Those 4,700 points are also the most by a NEC heptathlete this season.

Kilmer won the high jump (5’4.25″) and finished second in the 100m hurdles (15.20 seconds), shot put (34’1.25″), 200m (26.54) and javelin (112’6″). She was fourth in the long jump (16’10”) and 800m (2:33.08). Kilmer had personal-best efforts in the high jump, 100m hurdles, javelin and 800m.

Kilmer is ranked in the Top 10 overall in the NEC in the high jump (2nd), 100m hurdles (5th) and javelin (10th).

Jessica Borduas, Emmanuel College lacrosse

Borduas was a standout girls high school lacrosse player for Holy Cross. She has been making her mark as a freshman at Emmanuel College, and she was recognized by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference for her efforts.

Borduas was named GNAC Rookie of the Week after a strong effort in a 15-5 win over Norwich University. It was the lone game Emmanuel played that week, but Borduas made the most of it. She scored a game-high four goals for the Saints in the win.

Borduas has started all 13 games for Emmanuel. She is second on the team in goals (28) and third in points (37).

Terrell Patterson, Southern Connecticut State University track and field

The former Kaynor Tech standout competed in the UConn Northeast Challenge last Saturday in Storrs, and he put in a tremendous effort against a lot of Division I competition.

Patterson finished second out of 23 competitors in the 1500m in 3:54.98. The only runner to place ahead of the SCSU sophomore was UConn junior Kyle Brackman. Brackman finished .20 second faster than Patterson.

Patterson made the Northeast-10 Conference’s weekly honor roll for his effort at the UConn meet. He certainly proved that you don’t have to go to a Division I school to be a tremendous athlete.

McKenna Driscoll, University of Saint Joseph softball

This former Bristol Central standout catcher has supplied the power for the Bluejays in her junior season.

Driscoll leads USJ with three home runs. She hit the latest of her three dingers on April 13 at Lasell. Driscoll is tied for second on the team in doubles (7) and is fourth in RBI (16). Driscoll is hitting .359 (28-78) and has scored 16 runs.

Driscoll went 4-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of Albertus Magnus on Thursday. She had two doubles, two singles, two runs scored and two RBI.

Marissa Morales, Saint Peter’s University softball

This former Wolcott standout has experienced some of the hard times that come with being a college freshman, but she had a career day on Thursday.

Morales went 3-for-4 in a 13-6 win at Maryland Eastern Shore in the first game of a doubleheader. She had two doubles and scored two runs. Morales scored her first run in a three-run top of the second inning. She scored her second run in the top of the seventh inning, the final run of the game for Saint Peter’s.

Morales’ previous career-high for hits in a game was two, which she did twice. She has 13 hits, has scored eight runs, and she is a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.
