Blasius Chevrolet has ridden a recent hot streak into a tie for second place with the Naugatuck Dogs in the Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League.
Naugatuck (8-3) owns the head-to-head tiebreaker, and both teams — along everyone else in Tri-State — is chasing the undefeated, defending champion Watertown Blaze (12-0). Blasius (8-3), however, is putting itself in solid playoff position with its strong play of late. The team formerly known as the Brass City Brew has won seven straight games.
Pitching has been a key component, with former Holy Cross star Gary Novakowski serving as one of the leaders of the staff. When Novakowski is on the hill, Blasius has a great chance of winning the game. The ageless Joe Deming is also a key arm for Blasius, and there’s left-hander Joe Serafin for opposing hitters to deal with. Brass City pitchers have let up just five runs over the past four games.
Blasius players Jon Conlon, Matt Wahl, Jeff Fonti and Fraz Kader were named all-stars. The all-star game was played on Sunday, June 25 at Litchfield’s Community Field. Those players have also been vital to the success of Blasius this season.
Blasius had an unenviable schedule to open the season as it played Naugatuck and Watertown in the first two games. Both games were losses, but Blasius has won eight of nine since.
