Connecticut swept Massachusetts in a high school all-star baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Boston College High School, and there were locals in the middle of it all.
The senior squad won 12-3, with Matt Bonvicini of Holy Cross and Andrew Owsianko of St. Paul each contributing at the plate. Bonvicini had a two-run single during the third inning, when Connecticut jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Bonvicini later added another two-run single to help Connecticut blow the game open. Owsianko ended his day 2-for-4, including a RBI single. St. Paul head coach Vic Rinaldi served as an assistant on the Connecticut junior squad.
Bonvicini and Owsianko were joined on the senior team by Sacred Heart’s Will Morales.
In the junior game, won 5-4 by Connecticut, Holy Cross pitcher Fran Phelan Jr. got the start. He was joined on the junior team by Sacred Heart shortstop Jimmy Edwards.
The NVL had a strong season on the baseball diamond, so it made sense that several local players represented Connecticut in Saturday’s all-star games.
