Wolcott girls lacrosse plays first match in program history

Sophomore Cianna Navarro scored the first two goals in the history of Wolcott girls lacrosse Monday.

The final tally on the Joe Monroe Field scoreboard read 14-2 in favor of Jonathan Law against Wolcott girls lacrosse on Monday.
The score doesn’t matter.
What matters is Wolcott girls lacrosse stepped on the field Monday for its first-ever match at the varsity level. It was one of several firsts on the day.
Thirty-two seconds into the second half, sophomore Cianna Navarro scored the first goal in program history. Late in the match, she added another goal. Navarro is thrilled to be on the field. The lacrosse programs were approved in the 2016-17 school budget.
“I’m really happy we actually got it as a high school team,” Navarro said.
To be able to play means a lot to the Wolcott girls, and it will mean a lot to the Eagle boys, who are scheduled to play their opener Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Middletown at Monroe Field. It’s also supposed to rain, so keep an eye on my Twitter account for any schedule updates.

Wolcott’s junior Regan Richard (18) makes a move toward goal.

Yes, Wolcott was way behind when Navarro scored, but she wanted there to be meaning behind her goal.
“I just want to show the girls that you can keep trying,” Navarro said.
Eagle head coach Marty DiTuccio saw the effort in his girls.
“The girls all played hard,” DiTuccio said. “The majority of them have not played this game.”
Twenty-six girls came out for Wolcott lacrosse, of which 24 remain. Only 6-7 of those 24 have played lacrosse before this season, so there’s a steep learning curve.
Jonathan Law, on the other hand, is in its fifth season. Law’s players have experience in throwing, catching and playing defense, things that Wolcott will pick up on as time moves along. Law’s relentless pressure in the first half made for a long day for junior goalie Morgan Kiely.
Both Navarro and DiTuccio have aspirations for better play as the season moves along.
“I’d just like us to work hard every game and not get down,” Navarro said.
“I need to see more of a sustained offense, and our defense has to be better,” DiTuccio said.
There’s a long way to go and much to learn, but the Wolcott girls are putting in the effort.
“They’re working hard,” DiTuccio said. “They come every day, they’re on time.”
Monday’s match was the first step in a developmental process. On Tuesday, the Wolcott boys are scheduled to begin the same journey.
