BRISTOL’S SPRING ROUNDUP #2: Maghini named city Youth of the Year

NOTE: I’m trying something different this week. The roundup will be more geared toward highlights instead of trying to cover everything that goes on in the area. Hope you like it. As always, you can reach out to me with a highlight candidate during the week on Twitter @SportsonCT69, Facebook at www.facebook.com/sportsonct69 and by email at sportsonct69@gmail.com

Jill Maghini’s major honor: The Bristol Eastern senior received a tremendous honor off the softball field on Wednesday when she was chosen as 2017 Youth of the Year.
Bristol Eastern head softball coach Scott Redman tweeted about it Wednesday.
“Congratulations to Jill who was named YOUTH OF THE YEAR for the entire city of Bristol! Way to go,” Redman wrote.
The Bristol Boys & Girls Club website states that the award is given to members “who embody the values of leadership service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact that Boys Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people.”
Remember, high school athletes are student-athletes, and Maghini is a tremendous all-around person.
Hello 5-and-0: St. Paul has five wins and zero losses heading into today’s 4 p.m. showdown against also undefeated Seymour (6-0).
The Falcons won three games this past week and scored 40 runs total. St. Paul took down Woodland 15-0 on Monday, defeated Derby 13-2 on Wednesday and knocked off Watertown 12-6 on Thursday.
Abby Poirot (3 RBI), Brooke Perez (2 RBI, 2 runs scored) and Brigid Johndrow (3 runs scored) had four hits apiece in the Woodland game. Alessandra Milardo also had three RBI, and she fired a six-inning shutout in the circle with nine strikeouts.
St. Paul used a nine-run burst in the fourth inning to get past Derby. Milardo led the attack with three hits while Janessa Gonzalez, Johndrow and Perez had two each. Poirot started in the circle, pitched four innings and picked up the win.
After losing a 5-0 lead against Watertown, St. Paul was able to push through to victory. Perez (2 RBI), Milardo and Johndrow had three hits apiece while Poirot and Jessica Persechino added two hits each. It was the second two-hit game of the week for Persechino.
Rally caps!: Bristol Eastern scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and snatch a 5-1 road victory at E.O. Smith on Monday.
Jordan Fitzsimons had a two-out, two-run triple to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead. Jill Maghini’s two-out, two-run single provided the cushion for winning pitcher Erin Girard, who improved to 3-0.

SOCCER
Costantiello commits: It may have happened on April 7, but it gets put in here because of the new style of the roundup.
Bristol Eastern senior Gian Costantiello signed his letter of intent to play soccer and attend Western New England University.

BASEBALL
Drew goes deep x two: St. Paul slugger Andrew Owsianko smacked two home runs in Monday’s 6-3 win at Woodland.
Owsianko supplied the power, and Wes Lahey provided the pitching. Lahey pitched a complete game and collected the win.
Bator flirts with no-no: St. Paul senior pitcher Jack Bator carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 12-0 win over Derby in the home opener.
Four hits apiece for two Central hitters: That would be Jalen Diaz and Jake Santiago.
Diaz went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in a 15-1 win at Middletown on Wednesday. Santiago was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.
Bristol Eastern gets first two wins: The Lancers started the season 0-2, but evened their record with a pair of wins last week.
Bristol Eastern started the win streak Thursday with a 9-2 victory at Maloney. Saturday brought a trip to Norwich’s Dodd Stadium, and the Lancers came away with a 4-2 win over Norwich Free Academy.
In the NFA victory, Jake Violette’s two-run single put Eastern ahead 4-2 in the seventh inning, according to Bristol Observer writer Michael Letendre. Anthony Lozier brought home the tying run on a bases loaded walk. Zach Marquis pitched a gutsy complete game.
Violette was also the winning pitcher Thursday at Maloney.

TRACK AND FIELD
Medina wins x four: Bristol Central senior Luis Medina was part of four wins — three individual and one relay — in a victory over Maloney at home on Tuesday.
Medina won the 100 and 200 meters and long jump as an individual. Medina was also part of the winning 4×400 relay.
Two wins each for LeBeau, Soucy, Rodriguez and Santacroce: Bristol Eastern’s Chris LeBeau, Donovan Soucy, Felipe Rodriguez and Maggie Santacroce all won two events on Tuesday.
Eastern went up against Platt and Middletown in a tri-meet at Bristol Eastern High School.

BOYS LACROSSE
21 goals: St. Paul stuck that number on the board in a 21-2 win over Amistad-Career on Wednesday.
