Don Soucy began his role as a Senior Advisor for the Little League Eastern Region, based in Bristol, on Wednesday.
What it meant was bigger than a new start. It signaled the end of an era.
Wednesday was the first day in more than 25 years that Soucy wasn’t in charge of the Little League Eastern Region. Soucy held the position of director all that time, but the job is now in the capable hands of Corey Wright. Soucy will officially retire in June.
“I can’t think of two weeks out of 25 years that I got up in the morning and said I really don’t want to go to work every day,” Soucy said in a press release posted on Little League’s website. “I love going to work. I love Little League. But it’s time to pass the torch, and I know that Corey will do a fantastic job leading this region and assisting our great volunteers.”
Wright had some nice words for his former boss.
“There is not a person on the complex that doesn’t know who Don is and when the teams come into Bristol, they know who he is,” Wright said. “He’s very well respected within the community, not only in the Little League family, but overall. His impact will be forever felt.”
Soucy, who became director in 1991, helped oversee the construction of the beautiful A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Training Center. Many a memory for young players — baseball and softball — and their families have been made at the complex.
Little League offered partial funding to construct the Dennis Malone Aquatic Center, used by all three Bristol high schools for meets and practices.
It’s not just the physical facilities that were built during Soucy’s tenure. The volunteers who came back year after year to see to the needs of players, coaches, parents, media and fans were so important. Soucy had a fondness for those volunteers.
“I have to give it to the volunteers, they were the team,” Soucy said. “We have had wonderful young people that have worked for us over the years, and I think that is my greatest bit of pride.”
Wright has been Assistant Director under Soucy for 16 years, and now he leads the way at the Eastern Region.
“I am extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn and work with Don in the operation of the Eastern Region, and I look forward to continuing our work in support of the great local league efforts throughout our region,” Wright said.
Soucy will be there as an advisor until June, then he will take a well-earned retirement with his family.
