Event du jour is no more. Instead of Event du jour, I have decided to go with a post called BIG GAME ALERT. I will look to point out a key game or event going on in the CT-69 area. If you want to comment on my choice or suggest one of your own for another day, please Tweet at me @SportsonCT69 or email me at sportsonct69@gmail.com
Here’s the first of what will hopefully be many BIG GAME ALERTS:
Sacred Heart at Kennedy boys basketball, 7 p.m. at Kennedy High School
Let’s face facts. With the way the Hearts are blowing through the NVL — minus a challenging game against Holy Cross last Friday — not many teams are going to hang with this juggernaut. Still, every team in the NVL would love to be the one to give Sacred Heart its first “L” in the NVL this season, and every team marks the Hearts down as a big game.
You can put Kennedy up near the top of that list. The last time the Eagles played the Hearts, they were shellacked 96-49 at Alumni Hall with a TV audience from CPTV Sports watching, a radio audience from WATR AM 1320 listening, and a SRO Alumni Hall rocking. The game was supposed to be a showdown, but Sacred Heart had other ideas and cruised.
Where have the teams gone since? Well, Sacred Heart (12-2, 12-0 NVL, 4-0 NVL Brass Division) still hasn’t lost a game in the NVL, though it did drop back-to-back out-of-state matchups in the middle of last month. Kennedy (11-2, 10-2 NVL, 2-2 Brass) is in a second place tie in the Brass Division with Crosby. Both the Eagles and Bulldogs have two losses after Crosby won 80-68 at Kennedy last week. Kennedy has had a solid season so far, and you know this team has pride. There’s no way they like what happened in the first matchup against the Hearts, so expect them to come out fired up on their home floor tonight. Whether that added energy means anything remains to be seen. Holy Cross got the closest to Sacred Heart in the NVL so far, and that was still a 12-point loss.
As with any Sacred Heart game in the city this season, get there early if you want a seat.
