St. Paul and Holy Cross were the only local teams to move on from the first round of the girls basketball state tournament.
Both teams are in Class M. St. Paul, the No. 3 seed in Class M, hosts No. 14 Immaculate in a second round matchup Thursday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs eliminated the Falcons in last year’s Class S tournament.
Holy Cross, Class M’s No. 4 seed, hosts No. 20 Weston in the second round Thursday at 7 p.m. Weston was a not surprising winner over No. 13 Wilcox Tech in the first round.
In the Class M first round, St. Paul romped No. 30 East Catholic 72-44 behind 23 points from senior Lizzy Cretella. Holy Cross blasted No. 29 Kaynor Tech 66-19 behind 18 points from RaShana Siders.
Kaynor Tech, Kennedy, Wolcott, Bristol Eastern and Crosby all lost in the first round. Here’s what happened, along with their final records:
Kaynor Tech: The Panthers saw a successful season come to an end against Holy Cross in Class M on Saturday. Allison Terry and Sarah Wisniewski both scored five points in the loss. It was the final game for Kaynor Tech seniors Nathalie Vega, Nathalia Vega, Allison Terry, Jazmin Byars and Kaitlyn Thomas. The Panthers finished with a 10-12 record.
Kennedy: The Eagles were the No. 12 seed in Class LL but had to face defending state champion Wilton, the No. 21 seed, on Saturday. Kennedy lost 54-45. Sarah Emmanuel-Norwood and Destiny Prather each scored 11 points for the Eagles. It was the final game for Kennedy seniors Lynadia Whiting, Sarah Emmanuel-Norwood and Emily Ramos. The Eagles finished with a 18-6 record.
Wolcott: The Eagles were the No. 26 seed in Class M and drew No. 7 Weaver in Class M on Saturday. Wolcott lost 32-29 and saw its season come to an end. Raven Cody led the Eagles with 16 points. It was the final game for Wolcott seniors Allyson Hickey, Allessandra Mix, Briana Japs, Madison Greenstein and Amanda Japs. The Eagles finished with a 10-12 record.
Bristol Eastern: The Lancers, seeded No. 20 in Class L, couldn’t keep up with high-scoring No. 13 Northwest Catholic on Monday and lost 87-63. Diana Wnuk led Eastern with 21 points. It was the final game for Lancer seniors Jamilla Shoultz, Anna Kelley and Gianna D’Amato. Eastern finished with a 12-10 record.
Crosby: The Bulldogs were the No. 11 seed in Class LL but were knocked off by No. 22 Woodstock Academy, 58-48. It was the final game for Crosby seniors Ninoshka Figueroa-Robles, Mariah Machado, Yoseiris Castro and Destin Trammell. The Bulldogs finished with a 15-7 record.
