The St. Paul baseball team has been hitting home runs in bunches.
The Falcons (10-1) have 26 homers to their credit after two more from Mario Izzo in Monday’s 11-0, five-inning home win over Seymour. Izzo has eight home runs for the season, including five in his last two games. Interestingly enough, Izzo is second on the team in taters.
First place belongs to Ryan Daniels and his nine home runs. Five other Falcons have touched ’em all this season with Casey Cerruto and Jon Remillard hitting multiple homers. Cerruto has four dingers while Remillard has hit two. Owen Davis, Brendan Foley and Devin Kulas have all hit one home run this season.
St. Paul has hit 13 home runs, or half of its season total, in the last three games. The Falcons have taken advantage of some shorter fields, crushing six home runs at Naugatuck and five more at Wolcott. On Tuesday, St. Paul’s power bats face the biggest test of the regular season outside of Municipal Stadium in Waterbury. The Falcons face Litchfield at Hartford’s Dunkin’ Donuts Park with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
For those unfamiliar with the dimensions of the home of the Yard Goats, they are: 325 feet down the left field line; 362 to left center field; 392 to the left side of the center field wall; 400 to center field; 388 to the right side of the center field wall; and 308 down the right field line.
But wait, there’s more. A ball that hits the net in front of the bottom level seating in right field is in play. To hit a home run to right field, the ball must go into the second deck.
Can a professional ballpark contain St. Paul’s power bats? We’ll just have to wait and see.
