DIVISION IV BOYS GOLF: Holy Cross finishes fourth

Holy Cross boys golf finished the season on a high note by taking fourth place at the Division IV golf state championship on Tuesday at Fairview Farm Golf Course in Harwinton.
The Crusaders put up a team total of 330, just two strokes off of Litchfield and Morgan, which tied for second place with 328.
Sophomore Mike Mencio led Holy Cross with a 9-over par round of 81, good for a tie for 18th place overall. Junior Greg Picard carded an 83, which tied him for 23rd place. Ironically, teammates Vin Graziano and Ben Mahler also shot 83, as did Tyler Woodward of Coginchaug. Graziano is a freshman and Mahler a senior. Senior Alexander Matos took home an 86 (tie for 36th place). The top four individual scores count toward the team total.
St. Paul Catholic and Sacred Heart also competed in the Division IV tournament. The Falcons tied for 12th at 367 with Notre Dame-Fairfield while the Hearts were alone in 14th at 372.
St. Paul’s top player was Ryne Salius, who shot an 86. The top score for Sacred Heart came from Shea Zaccagnini, who put up an 86 as well.

Portland won the state title with an excellent team score of 308, led by Nicholas Piersall’s 3-under par 69. The highest score that counted for the Highlanders was an 81.
