The Bristol Greeners won two games in the final weekend of the Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League regular season to earn one of 12 playoff spots.
Bristol entered the playoffs as the No. 10 seed and met the No. 7 Torrington Rebels in a first round best-of-three series. The Greeners nearly stole a game at Fuessenich Park, only to fall in 10 innings. Bristol’s season ended the next night at Page Park in Bristol.
Here’s what happened:
Game 1, Thursday 7/21
Torrington 7, Bristol 6, 10 innings (Fuessenich Park): The Greeners held a 6-4 lead entering the last of the seventh inning, only to see the Rebels tie the game on a RBI triple and subsequent overthrow that allowed the tying run to score. Troy Micale and Kyle Pilarski had doubles for Bristol.
Torrington 8, Bristol 3 (Page Park): The Greeners were able to tie the game at 2 after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning. After that, it was almost all Rebels. Torrington was able to keep Bristol’s offense at bay and end the series.
The Greeners finished the season with a record of 8-11.
REGULAR SEASON
Bristol claimed victories over the Burlington Hunters (9-4), Southington 66ers (10-5), East Mountain Cougars (2-1), Valley Thunder (9-5), Thomaston Threshers (7-3), Canton Crushers (6-1), Litchfield Cowboys (11-10) and Tribury Twisters (3-1). The wins over Litchfield and Tribury on July 15 and July 17 clinched a playoff berth for the Greeners.
PLAYER NOTES
Jake Martel, an assistant coach with the Bristol Post 2 American Legion program, turned in several solid plays in the outfield during the Tri-State exhibition game against the Torrington Titans on the Fourth of July.
