Holy Cross romps New Britain, stays undefeated: How’s this for a final score?
Holy Cross 64, New Britain 41. In a word, wow.
The Crusaders improved to 4-0 with wins over the Golden Hurricanes and the Naugatuck Greyhounds.
Holy Cross has been led by Nyzair Rountree, Kerson Etienne and DeAndre Wallace. The Crusaders have a big game Tuesday against Sacred Heart, also undefeated.
Other undefeated teams in the city: Put Kennedy and Waterbury Career Academy on the list. The Eagles romped Wolcott to get to 3-0. For the Spartans, a win over Seymour got them to 3-0.
Ty Sands, a Crosby transfer, has been an impact player for Kennedy. Marquan Watson has been a force for WCA.
Crosby dealt first loss: The Bulldogs were blown out by East Hartford, but still sport a 3-1 record.
Crosby is led by seniors Jeremiah Kendall and Miguel Rivera, along with junior Ivan Craig and sophomore Kerwin Prince. The Bulldogs beat opponents by turning them over or blocking their shots, then getting out in transition.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Kennedy still unbeaten: Kennedy survived a tough home challenge against Wolcott, taking the battle of the Eagles by a score of 45-42.
Raegon Shirling-Davis led a balanced attack with 13 points. Joyce Benton had 9, Yakira Edwards and Hannah West 8 apiece, and Shyan Perez 7. Kennedy improved to 5-0 with the win.
Sacred Heart wins own title: It took overtime, but the Hearts knocked off Joel Barlow 36-31 to win their holiday tournament.
Sacred Heart started the tournament with a win over Naugatuck. The Hearts improved to 4-2 with the wins.
Holy Cross 5-1: The Crusaders have won three straight since being beaten by Mercy in the CPTV Sports Tip-Off Classic.
Holy Cross demolished Lauralton Hall on the road on Friday to get to 5-1.
The Crusaders play at Sacred Heart (4-2) Tuesday in a big game for both teams.
Waterbury Career Academy a solid 3-3: The Spartans lost their first two games of the season, including a tough 48-47 decision to Derby. Since then, WCA has won three of four. The Spartans took down Naugatuck Tuesday on the road to get to .500 for the second time this season.
Kaynor Tech wins tournament: The Panthers knocked off Abbott Tech and Goodwin Tech to claim Goodwin Tech’s holiday tournament crown.
Kaynor improved to 3-4 with the wins.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Kennedy: Marc-Anthony Telusma finished second in both the 55 and 300-meter dashes at the Jack Long Invitational on Tuesday in New Haven.
At the Hillhouse Qualifier meet on Friday, Christy St. Juste was fourth in the shot put while Quintasia Bellamy claimed fifth. Klani Brathwaite was 10th in the long jump.
Kaynor Tech: At the Jack Long meet, Terrell Patterson claimed third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,000. Jordon Wilkins was second in the 55 hurdles, and Hannah Stoveken placed ninth in the 1,600. Zyeira Brown was 10th in the 55 dash.
The Panthers were even better at the Hillhouse Qualifier. Patterson was first in the 1,600, Wilkins second in the 55 hurdles, Stoveken sixth in the 3,200 and Brown seventh in the 55 hurdles.
Wilby: At Jack Long, Dawyne Blackwood was fifth in the 55 dash while Bryan Oliveira placed ninth in the 3,200.
Sacred Heart: At Jack Long, Joel Guzman was seventh in the 55 dash while Edward Williams took 10th in the same event.
Guzman claimed second in the 300 at the Hillhouse Qualifier.
Crosby: At the Jack Long meet, Megan Holland placed eighth in the 600.
At the Hillhouse Qualifier, Andrew Millings claimed eighth in the high jump while Holland finished ninth in the 800. Santos Lopez took 10th in the shot put.
WRESTLING
McDonald earns Fast Fall honor: When it came to the quickest pins at Simsbury’s Frank Chaves Invitational, no one was quicker than Kevin McDonald.
McDonald secured four pins in a total of 10:50 on Tuesday. He finished in a tie for third place at 126 pounds.
