It was only the fourth game of the regular season, but what an important one it was for the Wolcott girls soccer team.
The Eagles hosted the Holy Cross Crusaders on Monday under the lights of Joe Monroe Field, and they emerged with a 1-0 victory over their NVL rivals. The loss was the first for Holy Cross, which saw its record fall to 3-1. Wolcott improved to 3-0-1, the tie coming against Woodland Regional on Sept. 13 in Beacon Falls.
Junior Brooke Tracey scored the lone goal for the Eagles in both games. In the win over Holy Cross, Tracey scored in the 34th minute, and the goal held up under a massive offensive barrage from the Crusaders. Senior keeper Allison Gough made 11 saves in the victory, according to a story from Joe Palladino on The Goal Zone website.
Wolcott is now one of four teams in NVL girls soccer, including three in its own Iron Division, with unbeaten records. Fellow Iron members Watertown and Naugatuck are 3-0 and 2-0. Wolcott and Woodland are both 3-0-1.
