It was a matter of time before No. 15 Wolcott girls soccer found the back of the net during its Class M first round match against No. 18 Amistad of New Haven on Tuesday evening at Joe Monroe Field.
The Eagles were first to almost every ball, and they put plenty of pressure on the opposing goal. Pressure defense from Taylor Riviezzo near the corner led to an Alex Arteaga steal on the goal line. Arteaga got the ball back and deposited it in the net.
Two quick goals from Tiona Watts followed, and Wolcott rolled from there to an 8-0 victory. Arteaga added a second goal, Brooke Tracey scored twice, Sam Hickey had a goal and an assist, and Taylor Riviezzo tallied a goal. Marissa Morales, Samantha Riviezzo and Ella Vaughn had two assists apiece.
Hickey controlled and distributed the ball in the midfield, and Morales bolted down the sidelines, putting pressure on the Amistad defense. The visitors played an offside trap, but once the Eagles broke it, they had easier chances to score. The home side’s defense also shut down any chance of Amistad establishing offensive rhythm. Ally Gough didn’t have to make a save in the shutout.
Wolcott (11-5-2) plays at No. 2 Granby Memorial on Thursday at 2 p.m. The Bears (15-1 regular season) promise to be a tougher challenge for the Eagles, and the lone loss for the NCCC foe was to Class LL top seed Suffield. Still, given what’s happened in the first two days of state tournament play, games are decided on the field, not by seed or what happened in the regular season.

Bristol Eastern girls soccer made a long ride to Bridgeport, but the No. 23 seed made the trip worth it with a 6-0 victory over No. 10 Bullard-Havens Tech in the first round of Class L.
Myah Croze had a monster game with four goals and two assists. Kailey Laprise had a goal and three assists while Sara Tyminski also scored. Providing an assist apiece were Kate Kozikowski and Brooke Dauphinee.
The Lancer defense made sure the offense could pad on to the lead, and the road team rolled on.
Thanks to an upset in another game, Eastern will host a second round game on Thursday at 2 p.m. The opponent will be No. 26 Joel Barlow, who claimed a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Woodstock Academy by outshooting them 7-6 in penalty kicks.
In the only other local tournament game, No. 27 Bristol Central girls soccer had its season ended by No. 6 Bacon Academy in a 3-1 loss in Colchester (another long ride). It was the final game for seniors Aubrey Kelley, Sarah Guerin, Ali Policarpio, Sydney Capezzone, Ashley Macdonald, Selena Norton, Morgan Crumrine and and Zoe Sinclair.

Adalia Malick scored the goal for the Rams, and Kelley made some great saves in net. Central finished its season with a record of 7-9-1.
