Holy Cross girls soccer picks up big early-season win over Woodland

The Holy Cross girls soccer team picked up a big early season win on Monday night over Woodland at Ray Snyder Sr. Field.

The Crusaders knocked off last year’s Naugatuck Valley League tournament runner-up, 3-1, behind a goal and an assist from Grace D’Amico. Julia Benvegnu and Riley Fenn also scored for Holy Cross, and Emma Cassetta assisted on one. Gabby Rosado came up big in goal with 14 saves. The Crusaders improved to 2-0-1 with the win.

Tiana Franklin scored for the Hawks, who fell to 2-1. Ava Naclerio, who took over in goal for graduated standout Casey Mulligan, had 15 saves.

Holy Cross, under new head coach MaryKate Simoes, began the season with a 2-2 draw at Ansonia. The Crusaders blasted a young Naugatuck side, 7-0, before claiming the win over the Hawks. Simoes was an assistant to Marc Kenney last season.

Woodland, once again led by head coach Cait Hernon, began its campaign with a terrific 1-0 road win over South-West Conference foe Brookfield. The Hawks hammered the same Charger team the Crusaders tied, 6-0, before their first loss of the season on Monday.
