The Crosby boys basketball team defeated St. Paul, 73-57, on Wednesday night at The Crosby Palace.
The Bulldogs were never really threatened, but head coach Nick Augelli wasn’t happy at all with his team’s performance. The effort wasn’t good, and the players were getting on each other.
Crosby needed to be on its game in its next matchup at fellow one-loss team Torrington on Friday night. In the first half, the Bulldogs certainly weren’t on their game. The Raiders led, 23-20, after a cold shooting half by both sides.
Torrington held a four-point lead, 28-24, early in the second half. Crosby ripped off a 19-2 run through the rest of the third quarter. When C.J. McRae hit his third 3-pointer of the quarter just before the buzzer, the Bulldogs held a commanding 43-30 lead. McRae scored all nine of his points in the third quarter. Crosby went on to win going away, 57-35.
Curtis Ellis was terrific with 21 points, including 15 in the second half. Ellis was a menace on the offensive glass, creating several extra opportunities for Crosby. Micah Blackman played big inside and tallied 13 points. Khani Glenn was solid in the second half and contributed eight points for the game.
The second half effort gave Augelli some good feelings about his team, and the Bulldogs hope to ride that momentum into the new year. Crosby opens the new year against Seymour at home on Jan. 3. The Bulldogs play Seymour at Seymour Middle School on Jan. 5. Those games are both scheduled for 7 p.m.
