The Holy Cross football team pulled within six points of Bloomfield in their Class S state semifinal game Sunday at Phil Rubin Stadium.
Marquis Campbell’s third rushing touchdown, and Kevin Matiz’s third extra point, made the score 27-21 at the 5:09 mark of the third quarter.
Unfortunately, the third-seeded Crusaders couldn’t get any closer, and the second-seeded Warhawks pulled away for a 45-21 win. Holy Cross finished with a record of 9-3. Bloomfield (10-2) plays Ansonia this coming Saturday for the state championship.
The Warhawks came out firing, scoring all four touchdowns on pass plays on their way to a 27-7 lead. Campbell’s first touchdown cut an early 14-0 deficit in half with 16 seconds to play in the first quarter. He wound up with 330 yards on 39 carries, according to Mark Jaffee of The Red Zone (updated at 3:49 a.m. Monday).
Sunday’s game was the last for Holy Cross seniors Ryan Ciampi, Tom Ligi, Dario Sosa, Kevin Matiz, David Kacprzyski, Dustin Sannasi, Zak Morales, Dillon Fernandes, Don Shivas, Josh Holland and Joseph Daniels.
