What the Wilby girls basketball team lacks in victories, it doesn’t lack in heart.
The Wildcats lost 62-43 to Torrington on Friday night inside the Reggie O’Brien Gymnasium, but they played hard and those 43 points were a season-high. Tayla Hyman and Jerica Fabian led Wilby with 13 points apiece.
There were hustle plays abound in the first quarter, even though Wilby ended it down double digits. On one play, Hyman took the inbound pass and blew past a defender down the sideline. Hyman got all the way to the basket, but her layup fell off the rim. That was OK, because her teammate Fabian was there for the rebound and putback.
It may seem like an innocuous two points, but not to Wilby. Positives are important for a program that has struggled. The hustle plays didn’t lead to a win, but they may help the Wildcats out in the future.
Next Wednesday, Wilby faces Terryville, another team going through some of the same struggles as the Wildcats. That game is at 7 p.m. at Terryville High School. The Kangaroos have had some close losses, but the Wildcats will have their best chance at a victory this season.
