Central girls sink 13 3-pointers in holiday tournament final win over Farmington

Gabriella Bernier hit four straight 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Bristol Central girls basketball team ran away from Farmington in Monday’s BC Holiday Tournament final.

The Bristol Central girls basketball team came out firing from three-point range against Farmington, and the result was a 76-44 win in the Bristol Central Holiday Tournament final on Monday in the Charles C. Marsh Gymnasium.

The Rams (6-0) sank 13 3-pointers, including five from Gabriella Bernier and four from Kamaria Bowens. Bowens led Central with 19 points, Nicole Riemer had 17 and Bernier tallied 15, all from the three-point arc.

The Rams buried the River Hawks with an avalanche of three-point shots as they quickly established control of the game. Molly McMahon hit a 3-pointer to get Central started, then Bernier knocked down four straight three-point attempts. Add five points from Riemer, and the Rams had a 20-0 lead. Bowens didn’t score for the first time until a long two-point shot to put her team ahead, 22-0.

When Farmington managed to break Central’s pressure defense, it couldn’t put the ball in the basket. Their misses included a pair of layups and two free throws. The drought mercifully ended for the River Hawks on a drive and layup with 3:32 left in the opening quarter. Bowens sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a Riemer inside bucket for a 30-2 lead. Olivia Louis converted a conventional three-point play, then Sydney Ray made a shot from the left side. When the quarter ended, Central had an incredible 35-2 lead.

McMahon began the second quarter with, what else, a 3-pointer. The same thing happened in the third quarter when Bowens converted a shot from behind the arc. Central led, 51-17, at halftime, and the lead was still 32 points after three quarters, 67-35. Laylani Cespedes finished with nine points for the Rams while McMahon and Olivia Louis added six points apiece.
