Central girls roll to victory over Arel, Gilbert in BC Holiday Tournament

Bristol Central girls basketball head coach Steve Gaudet gives Kamaria Bowens a high-five after Gilbert called timeout during their Bristol Central Holiday Tournament game on Friday.

The Bristol Central girls basketball team was ready to play against Gilbert-Winsted of the Berkshire League in the opener of the Bristol Central Holiday Tournament between the teams on Friday in the Charles C. Marsh Gymnasium.

The Rams knew they had to slow down Yellowjacket senior Emily Arel, who is nearing the all-time scoring records in the BL, both the girls (Tracy Stolle, Wamogo; 1,924 points) and overall (Dave Vigeant, Litchfield; 2,149).

Central sophomore Leylani Cespedes was ready to shadow Arel from when the Gilbert senior broke the pregame huddle. Arel wound up with 25 points, including six 3-pointers, but she had to work for every single point she got. On offense, the Rams got a game-high 28 points from Kamaria Bowens and 22 from Nicole Riemer in a 77-49 victory. Bowens drove repeatedly to the basket and also bombed away from three-point range for four treys. Riemer buried the Yellowjackets in the paint.

Central sprinted to a 24-9 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 46-22 by halftime. The Rams cruised from there and improved to 5-0. Central will play Farmington in the holiday tournament final on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
