The Wolcott boys soccer team had a tough night on Tuesday at home against Naugatuck.
The Greyhounds beat the Eagles, 4-1, on the turf of Joe Monroe Field and earned a sweep of the season series. It was just Wolcott’s second loss of the season, with both coming against Naugatuck.
The Eagles didn’t have time to dwell on the loss, however, as they had a road game against Seymour at John T. DeBarber Memorial Field to worry about. Wolcott won that road game, 2-0, and showed that the NVL tournament has a chance to be wide open.
Seymour entered Wednesday’s game with a chance to clinch the top seed in the tournament with a victory. Wolcott saw any chance of the top spot go away with a loss to Naugatuck. The Eagles didn’t let the Wildcats take advantage of their opportunity on Wednesday.
Parker Zynda scored an unassisted goal in the 31st minute to put Wolcott ahead, 1-0. Tyson Brenes struck in the 34th minute off assists from Axel Kelsey and Connor Silva for a stunning 2-0 lead. The Eagles took that lead into halftime, then goalkeeper Sam Berninger (five saves) and the defense made it hold up while under pressure in the second half.
Wolcott head coach Bryan Plona heaped praise on his team after the game for a strong effort. That praise was well-earned, and the win gave the Eagles a final NVL regular season record of 11-2-1 (13-2-1 overall). Next up is the NVL tournament, and Wolcott showed last year that anything can happen.
