Wolcott baseball graduated 14 seniors from a team that reached the Class M state final at Middletown’s Palmer Field in 2023.
The 2024 version of the Eagles was expected to start slow, especially in the restructured, top-tier NVL Copper Division (Holy Cross, St. Paul, Woodland, Naugatuck). Wolcott’s beginning has been anything but slow.
The Eagles are 2-0 following wins over St. Paul and Seymour. Wolcott scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to snatch a 4-3 opening day win over St. Paul this past Saturday. On Monday, senior Drew Rocca and junior Michael McCormack combined on a 5-0 shutout of Seymour.
The only thing that has slowed Wolcott’s charge out of the starting gate is the weather. Rain has forced the postponement of a multitude of events, and it’s only supposed to continue this week. A consequence of the wet weather is a doubleheader that the Eagles are scheduled to host this Saturday. First up is Torrington, a member of the second-tier Brass Division, at 10 a.m. Wolcott hosts Wilby in the second game at 12:30.
