The Gonzaga men’s basketball team trimmed an 18-point second half deficit to 10 against UConn in their Top 10 matchup Friday night in Seattle.
There were less than four minutes left, and the Bulldogs had the partisan fans at Climate Pledge Arena cheering. The Huskies had the answer, and his name was Donovan Clingan.
Hassan Diarra made a move, then threw an alley oop to Clingan, who jammed it through with two hands. At the other end, Tristen Newton came up with a steal and passed to Clingan. The former Bristol Central big man dished ahead to Diarra for a layup.UConn’s lead was up to 14 points, 72-58, and Gonzaga called time with 3:26 to play. The Huskies went on to win, 76-63.
Clingan totaled 21 points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes. He shot 8 for 11 from the floor and 5 for 7 at the foul line. Clingan had three assists, two blocks and a steal. He scored eight of the first 11 UConn points of the game as the Huskies established him inside.
Clingan made the Big East Honor Roll for his efforts.
