Look for the top local team finish at Tuesday’s state divisional track and field meets at New Britain’s Willow Brook Park, and you’ll find the WCA boys.
The Spartans finished fifth in the Class M meet with 42 points. That put them only behind Stonington (50), Ledyard (60), Suffield (77) and state champion Tolland (78). WCA got to its fifth place finish with several good performances, but the best of all was the 4×100-meter relay. After barely missing out on an NVL championship last week, the Spartans captured state gold in the 4×100 in 43.30 seconds with team members Julian Snead, Micah Chen, Kristian Kennedy and Zyaire Ettson. There was a bronze medal apiece from brothers Lucas (400 meters, 49.48) and Alex (high jump, 5 feet-10 inches) Figueiredo. Lucas Figueiredo just missed another bronze in the 200, finishing fourth in 22.65. Chen had a fifth place finish in the 100 in 11.52. The top eight finishers earned team points, which meant the Spartans also got some from Kennedy (sixth in 100, 11.62); Alex Figueiredo (sixth in triple jump, 41-2.5); the 4×400 relay (sixth in 3:32.02; team of Mikael Isaacs, Will Mowrey, Alex Martinez and Lucas Figueiredo); and Ettson (seventh in 300 hurdles, 42.05).
Also at Class M: Holy Cross junior Bryan Elliot earned silver in the triple jump with a leap of 42-10.25. Wolcott junior Nickolas Bensavage took fifth in the shot put at 43-3.5.
St. Paul’s state champion: Falcon senior Tyler Turner captured gold in the Class S long jump with a winning leap of 21-6.75. Junior Jahsun Gayle earned bronze in the high jump at 5-10 while senior Jeremy Taveras was fifth at 5-8. Turner also had a fourth place finish in the 200 (23.02).
Senior Allie Barton claimed fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.86) and fifth in the long jump (15-6.25).
