Holy Cross football ends long Week 10 with a Monday night victory

Week 10 of the local high school football season took a little longer than normal, thanks to a subtropical storm threat Friday.

Holy Cross finished the week Monday night with a 56-6 win over Torrington at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field. The Crusaders improved to 7-2 and sit in second place in Class S behind NVL foe Ansonia (9-0).

Four games were played Thursday, none happened on Friday, and three more were contested on Saturday. Here’s how the week went:

THURSDAY, NOV. 10

Wilby 40, St. Paul 20: The run game showed up big-time for the Wildcats, who churned up 308 yards on 31 yards and scored five touchdowns.

James Richards ran 16 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns while Aaron James toted the ball six times for 111 yards and three scores. James also competed six of his seven passes for 44 yards. Angel Suriel led the receiving corps with three catches for 40 yards.

Brady McManama, Ryan Diaz and Jeremy Taveras ran for touchdowns for St. Paul. Both teams sit at 3-6 entering their final games of the season.

Watertown 20, Wolcott 7: Quinn Pawlak ran for a late 70-yard touchdown for the Eagles, who fell to 2-7.

New Britain 41, Bristol Central 14: Another rough second half doomed the Rams, who fell to 1-8.

Tre Blair had a monster game for Central with 31 carries for 249 yards and both touchdowns. The Rams were down just a touchdown at halftime, but the visitors outscored them 20-0 in the second half.

Gilbert-Northwestern-Housatonic 55, WCA 6: KaVaughn Canady threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Zyaire Ettson for the Spartans (4-5) in their loss at Snyder Field.

SATURDAY, NOV. 12

Bristol Eastern 27, Farmington 24: The Lancers improved to 3-6 with a satisfying road win over the River Hawks.

Jaiden Fore ran for three touchdowns (17, 1, 4), Rayshon Andrews added a nine-yard rushing score, and Adam Zavecz intercepted two passes on defense for Eastern.

Crosby 18, Oxford 14: The Bulldogs continued to emphasize the run, and the result was a victory that got them over .500 (5-4).

Michael Scott had game-high totals of 19 rushes and 97 yards for Crosby. Michail Scott rushed 10 times for 59 yards and Jeremiah Febus carried four times for 32 yards and a touchdown. John Herrington busted through for 85 yards on three carries, including a 45-yard scoring run. Febus completed three of his four pass attempts for 93 yards, including a 55-yarder to Jashua Sanabria.

Nevon Burke sprinted 85 yards on a kickoff for a touchdown while Sanabria had 135 all-purpose yards (55 receiving, 45 kickoff, 35 punt). On defense, Jaedan Cobb had an interception and a sack while Michail Scott tallied 13 total tackles and a sack. Two of Scott’s tackles went for losses.

Kennedy 51, Derby 20: The Eagles rolled to the road victory over the Red Raiders at Lou DeFilippo Field.

After starting the season with five straight losses, Kennedy has won three of its last four games. The Eagles improved to 3-6 with the victory.

MONDAY, NOV. 14

Holy Cross 56, Torrington 6: Marquis Campbell had three touchdowns (two receiving, one interception return) to lead the Crusaders to the lopsided victory in Waterbury.

Tom Ligi ran for two touchdowns and Drew Caouette threw for three scores, including one to Dylan Gray.
