Two years ago, Joey DeFillippi was a late-game assassin for a really Bristol Central High School boys basketball team.
Fast forward to today, and DeFillippi still has that killer instinct. The Mount Ida College sophomore nailed a 3-pointer with one second left to deliver a 73-71 victory over Emmanuel College for the Mustangs. DeFillippi’s shot got Mount Ida back over .500 at 7-6 on the season. He had 20 points (7-of-13 shooting, 4-of-8 3-pointers, 2-of-2 FTs) and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes of play.
I got to watch DeFillippi play when I covered Bristol Central for the local paper, and he was always dangerous at the end of a game. In the Class L state semifinals against Career Magnet as a senior, it was DeFillippi’s trey that sent the game into overtime. DeFillippi earned All-CCC South honors in his final year with the Rams. As proof of his late-game magic, here was his game-winner against Bulkeley in 2014 (video courtesy of classmate Elijah Minella).
It’s no surprise that DeFillippi still has game-winning magic left in him up at Mount Ida. That doesn’t make it any less amazing every time he does it.
