Locals do well at NVL track and championship meet in Torrington

Athletes from Crosby, Holy Cross, Kennedy, St. Paul, WCA, Wilby and Wolcott competed in the NVL track and field championship meet Saturday at Torrington High School.

Four locals won gold medals during the meet. They were Holy Cross senior Michael Weglarz in the long jump (21 feet, 8½ inches), Kennedy senior Reis Muccino in the javelin (152-0), WCA senior James Feliciano in the 110-meter hurdles (15.13 seconds) and Crosby junior Brian Dessalines in the 100 dash (10.93).

Muccino was a silver medalist in the shot put (129-9), and Dessalines helped Crosby captured silver in the 4×100 relay. Two St. Paul athletes, seniors Owen Wood in the pole vault (12-0) and Nicholas Mirabilio Mulhall in the javelin (146-2), also claimed silver.

Muccino also claimed a bronze medal, doing so in the shot put (42-11). Kennedy senior Chauncey Hicks grabbed bronze in the high jump (6-0) and triple jump (41-7). Kennedy junior Ariana Schofield took bronze in both the 100 (12.91) and 200-meter dashes (26.68). Wilby junior Ruben Navarro garnered bronze in the long jump (20-9) and St. Paul junior Allison Barton claimed bronze in the 100 hurdles (16.52). WCA sophomore Lucas Figueiredo took bronze in the 400 (51.73). The Holy Cross boys 4×800 (8:41.67) also took bronze.

The Holy Cross boys had the best local team finish, claiming fourth. The Naugatuck boys and Woodland girls won their second straight NVL titles. Local results from the meet are below. The top 8 (those who scored points for their team) are included.
