Dodge City Community College of Kansas jumped 10 spots and is ranked No. 10 in the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association Division I rankings.
So what, some might say? Well, a former Crosby boys basketball standout plays for the Conquistadors, and his name is Kerwin Prince.
Prince, a redshirt freshman, has had good games and subpar games so far this season for Dodge City (9-1). That happens when you’re a redshirt freshman. The bottom line though is the 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward is getting playing time on one of the country’s top teams. Prince has had played double-digit minutes in six of 10 games, including a high of 18 in a 101-69 rout of Garden City this past Saturday.
If Prince keeps doing what he did against Garden City, he might start seeing a lot more minutes. In those 18 minutes, Prince had season highs in points (17), field goals (8-for-8), rebounds (7) and steals (2).
Prince put his name in the transfer portal in March after being named East Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in a COVID-shortened season at Mercy College, a Division II NCAA school in New York. Prince was also second team All-ECC. Prince was a standout at Crosby before playing a post-graduate season at Notre Dame Prep in West Haven
