FOOTBALL WRAP-UP: Tough ending for Holy Cross, Bristol Central in playoffs

The No. 4 Holy Cross football team pulled even with No. 5 New Fairfield on a two-yard touchdown run by David Kacprzyski late in the first quarter of their Class S quarterfinal game at Municipal Stadium.

Kacprzyski’s score was set up by a 54-yard run by Tom Ligi. The Crusader run game had been terrific, and it appeared that more was in store. That turned out to not be the case. New Fairfield’s defense shut Holy Cross down, and the Rebels used a strong run game to score 34 straight points in a 41-7 victory. New Fairfield (9-2) gets the unenviable task of playing at No. 1 Bloomfield (11-0) in a semifinal game on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Holy Cross’ season ended at 8-3 after it fell in its first playoff game since 2011.

It was the final game in a Crusader uniform for seniors Valerio Capobianco, Mahkai Wilson, Caiden Charette, Keyshawn Banks, Luke Daddona, Jameson Fauth, Chase Zaccagnini, Jared Ash, Michael Shaker, Grant Mowad, RJ Damato, Robert Rosko and Ethan Fortin.

Maloney 49, Bristol Central 14: The first playoff game for the Rams since 1987 didn’t go well as the Spartans rolled to a Class L quarterfinal victory at Meriden’s Falcon Field.

Central’s second play from scrimmage was a lost fumble, and it was that kind of a night. The Rams turned it over four times in the first half (three interceptions) in an uncharacteristically sloppy performance. Victor Rosa ran for touchdowns of 59 and 2 yards in his final game at Central. Rosa also ran in a two-point conversion for the Rams, who finished a great season at 9-2.

It was the final game in a Central uniform for seniors Rosa, Jarrett Boxley (50-yard reception), Ashton Zabka, Daniel Kitmanyen, Damion Glasper, Xavier Ramirez, Justin Despins, Zachary Vanasse, Daniel Lauretti, Michael Thaxter, Malachi Jones, Jaden Goulbourne, Eric Bruno and Zyren Collins.
