It’s early, but Holy Cross has two teams that haven’t suffered a defeat so far this fall.
The Crusader girls volleyball team is 5-0 following wins over Ansonia, Housatonic and Oxford this week. Holy Cross beat Ansonia and Housatonic by 3-0 scores, then knocked off Oxford by a 3-1 count on Friday. The Crusaders are led by seniors Lyvia Bartoli, Michaela Bell and Nyasia Smith. Junior Tyra McCoy has been a strong contributor as well.
The Crusader boys soccer team is 3-0-1 and has won three straight since a scoreless draw against Oxford in the season opener. Holy Cross was supposed to play Woodland (3-0-1) in an early season showdown on Friday, but that was postponed due to field conditions following heavy rains. That game will now be played on Oct. 13 at Alumni Field. The Crusaders have some strong seniors, including Cameron Sivilla, Aiden Coelho, Patrick Osiecki and Jaiden Paniagua.
Speaking of showdowns, the Holy Cross girls soccer team played at Woodland this morning in a matchup of unbeaten teams. The Crusaders (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season, 3-1, to the Hawks (4-0-1).
There are several other local teams who are having strong seasons. Bristol Eastern (6-1), Bristol Central (5-2), Kaynor Tech (5-2) and Kennedy (4-1) have stood tall in girls volleyball. Hannah Webber has had some big matches for the Lancers, including 23 kills in a 3-0 victory over New Britain on Wednesday. The Rams have received strong contributions from Alex Rivera, Sam Sklenka, Olivia Clingan, Sarah Romano and Maddie Lodovico. Senior Nancy Nham has been leading the way for the Panthers. Julia Risi, Alejandra Ruales, Shaunye Dunbar and Evi Duro have paced the Eagles.
