Wilby boys soccer on 2nd half win streak

The Wilby boys soccer team was 0-4-2 entering its Oct. 23 game against Kennedy at Ray Snyder Sr. Field.

The Wildcats topped the Eagles, 2-1, that day, and that started a three-game winning streak. Wilby claimed a 3-1 victory over Crosby at Pedro DeBrito Field on Oct. 27. The Wildcats followed up the win over the Bulldogs with another against the Eagles, 1-0, last Thursday at Snyder Field.

Wilby saw today’s game against WCA postponed because the Spartans are distance learning due to a COVID-19 case. It was a missed opportunity to get to .500 for the first time this season, but the Wildcats are scheduled to get another chance on Election Day, Tuesday, against Crosby at DeBrito Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Senior Almin Cecunjanin scored a goal in the Oct. 23 and 30 wins over Kennedy. Sophomore Joshua Colon recorded a hat trick in the Crosby victory on assists by senior Mohammed Abdorazah, senior Nathan Daunis and junior Alex Alicea. Colon also scored in the Kennedy win on Oct. 23.

Senior Juan Garcia and the Wilby defense permitted one goal in the first two wins, then posted a shutout in the third win of the streak. Garcia totaled five saves in the first Kennedy win, then three more in the second Kennedy win.

Wilby has tripled its win total from 2019 (1-14-1) and matched the total from 2018 (3-12-1). The Wildcats went 6-9-1 in the regular season back in 2017 and played in the qualifying round of the Class L state tournament.
