This date in history: A pair of great comebacks by local baseball teams

June 1, 2019: Three local baseball teams advanced in the state tournament on this date, but two had to do so with comebacks.

St. Paul trailed Portland by two runs entering the top of the seventh inning of their Class S quarterfinal game in Portland. The Falcons struck for three runs in the seventh and stunned the Highlanders, 3-2. Julian Thayer and Ryan Parent got the rally going with back-to-back doubles, then Walker Sharp’s two-run single scored Joe Crowley and Sean Crean for the lead. Thayer retired Portland 1-2-3 in the last of the seventh to end the game.

Holy Cross found itself down four runs early in its Class S quarterfinal against Terryville. The Crusaders still trailed by a run in the last of the sixth inning when Will Greene drove in his brother John Greene to tie the game. That combination won the game for Holy Cross in the eighth inning. John Greene led off with a double, then scored on Will Greene’s single to win the game, 6-5.

Wolcott didn’t have any drama to deal with in its 8-0 Class M quarterfinal win over Haddam-Killingworth. A six-run fourth inning blew the game open for the Eagles. Trey Nastri and Anthony Ligi each went 2-for-4 for Wolcott. Brett Adams (6 innings) and Tom Marciano (1 innings) combined for the shutout.

Here’s my story about those games.
