This date in history: St. Paul lacrosse captures first WCLC boys title

May 24, 2018: The St. Paul boys lacrosse team had three goals for the 2018 season: be the top team in the Western Connecticut Lacrosse Conference; win the conference tournament; and win a state tournament game.

The Falcons, led by third-year head coach Chris Kennedy, connected on all three of those goals. St. Paul went 15-1 in the regular season and was the WCLC’s best team. The Falcons defeated rival Lewis Mills, 18-16, on the turf at Watertown High School to claim the WCLC tournament title.

Eight St. Paul players were named to All-WCLC teams before the championship game, then the Falcons displayed excellent balance as they held off the hard-charging Spartans.

St. Paul went on to get that first state tournament win, 17-6, over No. 17 seed in the first round of the Class S state tournament as its No. 1 seed. The Falcons lost to St. Joseph-Trumbull in the next round, but so did everyone else as the Cadets claimed the state title. It couldn’t dim what was a terrific season by St. Paul.

Here is my story from that championship game.
