Sacred Heart pulls away from Crosby in NVL boys basketball showdown

The Sacred Heart and Crosby boys basketball teams were tied late in the third quarter of Friday night’s NVL showdown at The Crosby Palace.

The Hearts had their 110-game NVL win streak on the line, and the Bulldogs were the last team to beat the Hearts. That happened in the 2014 NVL tournament title game, and Crosby was looking to thrill its fans with a repeat performance.

It wasn’t meant to be, and Sacred Heart junior Lorenzo Washington was a big reason why. Washington led and finished fast breaks, and he reached the basket with an ease that sparked the Hearts and irked the Bulldogs.

Washington tallied a game-high 38 points in the 74-63 victory, which increased Sacred Heart’s NVL win streak to 111 games. The Hearts improved to 5-0 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 4-3.

Washington scored 14 of Sacred Heart’s 24 points in the fourth quarter. That was after he tallied 13 of the 18 Heart points in the third quarter. Trevahn Duncan scored 11 points, Connor Tierney tallied eight points, Caleb Sampson added seven points, and Davon Ellison chipped in six points.

For Crosby, Justin Davis recorded a team-high 21 points. Alex Batista and Andre Pierre scored 12 points apiece, and Jose Soares added 10 points.
