The Wolcott Scrappers and Blasius Chevrolet hooked up in a Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League pitchers’ duel on a wet Tuesday evening at Hotchkiss Field in Prospect.
Jon Conlon’s RBI single scored Eric Rovinetti with the winning run in a 2-1 Blasius victory over Wolcott. Blasius improved to 6-1 and has won four in a row. Wolcott dropped to 5-4.
Rovinetti walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, then Paul Novakowski kept the inning alive with a single. Rovinetti got to third on the Novakowski single, then scored on Conlon’s single. Kellen Croce picked up the win after losing a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Gary Novakowski (5 innings, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts) and Fran Phelan Jr. (1 inning, 1 walk) combined for six shutout innings. Croce struck out two in his inning of work. Blasius scored its other run in the bottom of the first inning on a Rovinetti grounder that brought home Connor Goggin (single).
Tyler Smith (6.2 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, 4 strikeouts, 4 walks) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Wolcott. The Scrappers were able to push across a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. Steve Urbanski hit a grounder, reached first, and then took second on a throwing error. Isaiah Negretti’s sacrifice bunt moved Urbanski to third, then Jesus Garcia’s fly ball found grass in right field to tie the game.
Six different players had one hit in the game.
