Locals take on wet Farmingbury course in Jack Stigberg Memorial Tournament

It has rained an awful lot this spring.

That’s why all the golfers gathered for the 38th Jack Stigberg Memorial Tournament at Farmingbury Hills Golf Course were playing “winter rules” on Wednesday. Coaches at the tournament talked about how their home courses were soaked, and how some allowed very limited use of carts.

For those not familiar, “winter rules” means relief can be taken with certain lies because of adverse course conditions. That includes puddles and times where a golf ball becomes “plugged” in the ground.

It was a beautiful, warm spring day on Wednesday. Given the wet conditions, however, the four-under-par 66 posted by the winners, Matt Allan of Platt Tech-Milford and Kendall Evans of Ansonia, was quite impressive. The tournament utilized a shotgun start and was played in a best-ball format.

The best local finish was from the Holy Cross duo of Alex Ford and Thomas Moran, who shot a 73 and finished alone in fourth place. The St. Paul tandem of Ryne Salius and Michael Dolce tied for fifth place with a 74. The Sacred Heart twosome of Shea Zaccagnini and Caleb Shahen tied for seventh place with a 75.

Other local scores: John Mader-Josh Grant (Kaynor Tech), 84; Colin Brandt-Jared Dunn (Wolcott), 93; Jack Fishbein-Vinny Malena (Wolcott), 101
