Wolcott baseball didn’t allow a run in its two games in Tennessee this past week, and the Eagles return home with a 6-1 record.
Wolcott faced Jefferson County on Wednesday and claimed a 2-0 victory. Brett Adams got the better of his counterpart Matt Romines in a pitchers’ duel. Adams fired a complete game, gave up four hits, struck out 13 and walked two in his solid effort. Romines also threw a complete game.
The Eagles managed just four hits off of Romine, but one was a two-run single from Reece Ketchum in the top of the first inning that gave Adams all the support he needed. Dane Hassan and Trey Nastri each had a single and run scored while Alec Calabro added a single. Jack Drewry and Anthony Ligi each walked twice, and Jeff Nicol was twice hit by a pitch. Ligi also had a stolen base.
It took Wolcott’s offense much longer to get on the board on Thursday against Unicol County in another pitchers’ duel, which ended 1-0 in favor of the Eagles. Drewry and counterpart Kalb Metcalf threw up zeroes through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, Tom Marciano led off and was hit by a pitch. Hassan singled to right field to get Marciano all the way to third base. A grounder to first base moved Hassan to second, but Marciano had to hold at third base. With one out, Drewry lifted a fly ball to left field, and Marciano scored the game’s only run.
Drewry’s pitching line was impressive: complete game, three hits, 0 runs, 12 strikeouts, two walks. Nicol and Nastri each had a double while Hassan and Alex James both had a single. Metcalf threw a complete game for Unicol.
Wolcott’s first game back in Connecticut was supposed to be Saturday against St. Paul, but that contest was postponed due to rain. The Eagles are scheduled to play Derby on Monday at 3:45 p.m. at Naugatuck’s Rotary Field. Derby is playing all of its games away from home because of construction being done at the Ryan Athletic Complex.
