SPRING 2018 FLASHBACK: Wolcott baseball, Holy Cross softball played for state titles

High school spring sport practice began today as teams started working for the 2019 season. Here’s a look at the best team finishes from the 2018 spring sports season:

Baseball

Wolcott was the No. 3 seed in Class M and defeated Ansonia, Northwestern Regional, Bacon Academy and Ledyard on the way to the state final. The Eagles’ run ended with a loss to No. 9 Seymour in that state final.

Wolcott returns key seniors from that run, including Jack Drewry, Jeff Nicol, Trey Nastri, Dane Hassan and Brett Adams.

Softball

Holy Cross was the No. 7 seed in Class S and knocked off East Windsor, Thomaston, St. Paul and Coventry to reach the state final. The run ended for the Crusaders with a 5-4 loss to No. 1 Stafford.

Holy Cross returns key seniors from that run, including Allie Brown, Hannah Brown, Val Nobrega and Carley DeFoe.

Boys outdoor track and field

Bristol Central battled its way to a third place finish in Class L. The Rams bring back seniors Devin Flores, Pacifico Flores and Hunter Peterson, along with juniors Mark Petrosky, Jose Ramirez and Ben Stafford.

Sacred Heart tied for third place in Class S. The Hearts return seniors Edward Williams Jr., Klajdi Cepa and Michael DiGiovancarlo.

Boys lacrosse

St. Paul won the Western Connecticut Lacrosse Conference title and earned the No. 1 seed in Class S. The Falcons defeated No. 17 Tolland before falling to No. 9 St. Joseph of Trumbull in the quarterfinal round. St. Paul returns plenty of firepower, including seniors Kevin Ashworth, Connor Bogdanski and John Ivers, along with juniors Tucker Raymond and David Harrold. Sophomore Brycen Kennedy is also back.

Girls lacrosse

St. Paul, the No. 9 seed in Class S, took down No. 8 Lewis Mills 13-7 for its first-ever state tournament victory. The Falcons were eliminated by No. 1 North Branford in the quarterfinal round. St. Paul brings back seniors Emma Cretella, Catherine Ciampi, Carolyn Del Debbio, Addison Davis and Ashley Suzio.

Boys golf

Holy Cross finished ninth in Division IV, the best finish of any local team. The Crusaders return seniors Vin Graziano, Alex Ford, Chris Ford and Thomas Moran.

Girls tennis

Sacred Heart and St. Paul both lost Class S first round matches. The Hearts were the No. 3 seed while the Falcons were No. 7. Sacred Heart brings back seniors Siobhan Gilmore, Ava Longo and Hannah Dombroski along with juniors Katie Brown and Elizabeth Brown. St. Paul returns senior Ximena Varela-Marin, along with juniors Alexis Carabetta, Grace Carabetta and Tessa Rogers.
