NVL BOYS TOURNEY: Sacred Heart, WCA, Crosby move on to semifinal round

No. 1 Sacred Heart, No. 5 Waterbury Career Academy and No. 7 Crosby are all headed to the NVL boys basketball tournament semifinal round on Monday after wins on Saturday at Wilby High School.

Those three local teams are joined by No. 3 Torrington, which defeated No. 6 Wolcott 58-56. The Hearts blew away No. 8 Ansonia 91-55, the Spartans edged No. 4 Holy Cross 61-60, and the Bulldogs ran away from No. 2 Naugatuck by a final of 90-74.

Crosby and Torrington play at 5 p.m. on Monday inside the Reggie O’Brien Gymnasium at Wilby. Sacred Heart and WCA follow at about 7 p.m.

Some quick words about what happened in each quarterfinal:

No. 1 Sacred Heart 91, No. 8 Ansonia 55

Four Hearts scored in double figures: Jamaal Waters (27), Nate Tabor (25), Lorenzo Washington (11) and Omar Rowe (10). Sacred Heart led Ansonia 38-28 at halftime before outscoring them by 26 points in the second half.

No. 7 Crosby 90, No. 2 Naugatuck 74

Simply put, yikes. The Greyhounds were ambushed by the three-headed monster of Tyler Spears, Justin Davis and Kerwin Prince. Spears and Davis went for 22 points apiece while Prince added 19 points.

No. 3 Torrington 58, No. 3 Wolcott 56

The Eagles had made 12 3-pointers by early in the third quarter, but the Red Raiders didn’t allow any more after that and rallied for the win. Torrington outscored Wolcott 32-20 in the second half after trailing by 10 at the half. Elmin Redzepagic had a team-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Chris Harris (12 points, 3 treys) and Jack Drewry (10 points, 2 treys) also hit double figures for the Eagles.

No. 5 WCA 61, No. 4 Holy Cross 60

Marquan Watson went off for 28 points for the Spartans and got help from Jonathan Edwards (10), Lawrence Lazaro (9) and Khalil Simon (9).

The Crusaders canned 13 3-pointers in the loss, led by four from Kyle Lombardi (14 points), along with three each from Gaely Etienne (team-high 16 points) and Jahvon Myrthil (9 points). Jack Greene scored eight points while Akili Evans added seven.
