INDOOR TRACK: Edward Williams Jr. claims 55m hurdle title at State Open

Sacred Heart senior Edward Williams Jr. ended his indoor track and field career as the fastest 55m hurdle runner in Connecticut on Saturday. Williams ran the race in 7.43 seconds to take the gold medal at the State Open, which was held at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Williams took .22 second off of his preliminary time of 7.65 and bested second place Deshaune Poole of Hillhouse by .29 second (7.72). Williams was the lone individual champion from the area.

Wolcott junior Kathryn Rodrigues claimed a silver medal in the 1600m in a time of 5:07.69. Rodrigues finished just .28 second behind the winner, Danbury senior Lauren Moore. Rodrigues also ran in the 3200m, where she took 11th place.

There were two top five local finishers in the boys 600m. Bristol Central junior Jose Ramirez placed fourth (1:24.13) while Crosby senior Elijah Lewis was fifth (1:24.62).

Wilby sophomore Messiah Harling finished sixth in the long jump (21’2.50″). Bloomfield claimed the first, fourth and fifth spots in the long jump.

The Bristol Central boys 4x800m relay of senior Pacifico Flores, junior Mark Petrosky, senior Devin Flores and Ramirez took ninth place (8:12.96).

Williams, Rodrigues, Ramirez, Lewis and Harling all qualified for the New England championship meet, which is March 2 at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston.
