WEDNESDAY’S TOURNEY ROUNDUP: Wolcott, Holy Cross girls lose on PKs

Girls soccer, boys soccer and girls volleyball were the local sports at play during Wednesday’s CIAC state tournament action. There was only a single winning team from the area out of five who played, and that was Bristol Central boys soccer. Wolcott and Holy Cross girls soccer both lost heartbreakers on penalty kicks. The Bristol Central girls soccer team was eliminated by Naugatuck, and St. Paul girls volleyball was downed in five sets by Immaculate (Danbury). Here’s what happened in each game:

No. 10 Weston 2, No. 7 Wolcott 2 (Weston PK10-9)

Class M second round girls soccer

The words tough loss don’t even begin to describe what happened to the Eagles at Joe Monroe Field on Wednesday night. Having seen a girls soccer team I cover for my full-time job lose on penalty kicks Wednesday, I know how gut-wrenching it is. My penalty kick score was 6-4 through two rounds. Wolcott’s was 10-9 in favor of Weston in a marathon of penalty kicks. Tough way for the Eagles to end their season, which they did with a record of 14-3-2.

Sam Riviezzo and Morgan Matyoka scored in regulation for Wolcott. It was the final game for Eagle seniors Allie Gough (10 saves), Bella Piacentini, Sam Lagasse, Alex Arteaga, Tiona Watts and Ali Maringola.

No. 2 Granby Memorial 0, No. 15 Holy Cross 0 (Granby PK3-1)

Class M second round girls soccer

The Crusaders also had a tough loss on the road against the second-seeded Bears.

One hundred minutes of play were played to a scoreless tie, which brought on the penalty kicks. Granby made three to Holy Cross’ one (junior Sophia Vescera) and ended the Crusader season at 11-5-4. Junior goalkeeper Tori Schaffner played well in net to keep the game tied through those 100 minutes. It was the final game for Holy Cross seniors McKenna Ellsworth, Jasmine Thorpe, Adalisse Padilla, Madison Bushka, Elise Pelletier, Morgan Murray, Carley DeFoe and Meghan Diorio.

No. 22 Bristol Central 8, No. 11 Ellis Tech 0

Class L first round boys soccer

In a game postponed from Tuesday, the Rams ran all over the Golden Eagles in Danielson.

Adam Jones and Umar Malick both scored twice for Bristol Central, which hosts No. 27 Middletown today at 5:30 p.m. Diego Naranjo, David Bowes, Ellis Carmelich and Yanni Koci all scored one goal. Carmelich also had two assists for the winners. Tyler Manzone and Danny Gaudoin combined for the clean sheet for the Rams.

Bristol Central and Middletown are of course very familiar with each other. The CCC South Region foes split their regular season meetings.

No. 21 Immaculate 3, No. 5 St. Paul 2

Class S second round girls volleyball

The Falcons saw their great season end in a tough five-set loss to the Mustangs at home. The set scores were 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-25 and 15-7.

St. Paul rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set, but Immaculate was too much to overcome in that last set. Kelsi Blatchley totaled 14 kills and 17 service points, Rebecca Nerbonne had eight kills, Olivia Genovese tallied nine kills, and Alexis Carabetta added 34 assists. The Falcons ended their season with a record of 18-5. It was the final game for St. Paul seniors Juliette Russo, Nerbonne, Violet Rodriguez and Morgan Kolb.

No. 9 Naugatuck 3, No. 25 Bristol Central 1

Class L second round girls soccer

The Rams tied the game before halftime, but the Greyhounds scored twice in the second half to knock them out.

Bristol Central finished the season with a record of 7-10-1. It was the final game for Ram seniors Malick, Dulce Cruz Flores and Erika Santilli.
