THURSDAY’S TOURNEY ROUNDUP: Bristol Central boys win at home against Middletown

Boys soccer and girls volleyball were the sports that took center stage locally in CIAC state tournament action on Thursday.

Bristol Central boys soccer took advantage of its fortune and beat CCC South Region rival Middletown at home. Bristol Eastern girls volleyball downed CCC foe Farmington in four sets, Kennedy defeated North Haven in straight sets, and Bristol Central girls volleyball lost in straight sets at East Lyme. St. Paul boys soccer was eliminated by Immaculate (Danbury), and Holy Cross was downed by The Morgan School (Clinton).

Class L second round boys soccer

Mark Palma and Yonni Koci scored the goals for the Rams, who wound up being the home team after their win over No. 11 Ellis Tech, coupled with the Blue Dragons upsetting No. 6 East Lyme. Bristol Central faces a tough challenge in a quarterfinal round game against Daniel Hand (Madison) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Class L second round girls volleyball

The Lancers earned themselves another home match after knocking off the rival Indians in four sets. The set scores were 25-14, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-22. Zoe Lowe led Bristol Eastern with 17 kills while teammate Amber Blais wasn’t far behind with 15. Blais also had two aces while teammate Rebecca Bender led the Lancers with six aces. Aliana Rivoira and Ryley Plourde each had two blocks. Alex Dimattia totaled 32 digs, followed by Blais with 15, Lowe with 14 and Rivoira with 10. Rivoira also had a team-leading 48 assist. Bristol Eastern had just five errors on 72 total serve receptions. The Lancers host No. 5 Tolland in a quarterfinal on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Class L second round girls volleyball

The Eagles began their state tournament run with a straight-set victory over the Indians in Waterbury. The set scores were 25-18, 25-22 and 25-21. Kennedy, which had a first round bye, will play No. 3 RHAM on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Hebron.

No. 8 East Lyme 3, No. 9 Bristol Central 0

Class L second round girls volleyball

The Rams (18-5) saw their season come to a close against the Vikings in East Lyme. The set scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17. It was the final match for Bristol Central seniors Amanda Warner and Taylor Patnode. The Rams were a very young team in 2018 and should be good again in 2019.

No. 23 Immaculate 3, No. 7 St. Paul 1

Class S second round boys soccer

The Falcons (12-5-3) , playing in their second straight game at the Farmington Sports Arena, lost to the Mustangs. It was the final game for St. Paul seniors Bonifacious Sidharta, Samuel Mazzarelli, Spencer Sinkwich, Stefan Zwolinski, Lance Arellano, Adam Vin Linter, Nicholas Fiscella and David Richardson.

No. 4 Morgan 5, No. 13 Holy Cross 0

Class S second round boys soccer

It was a tough road trip for the Crusaders (9-6-4), who had their season ended by the Huskies in Clinton. It was the final game for Holy Cross seniors Kyle Moser, Dante Malaspina, David Desaulniers, Jayden Frageau and Jeremy Hamel.
