NVL VOLLEYBALL: St. Paul, Kennedy post home tourney wins

St. Paul girls volleyball was the first varsity program to play on the court of the new Rev. Brian W. Monnerat Gymnasium.

On Saturday afternoon, the Falcons became the first to host a postseason contest which it faced the Naugatuck Greyhounds in a NVL Tournament first round match. St. Paul, which is having a terrific season, gave the home fans something to cheer about with a 3-0 sweep. The set scores were 25-14, 26-24 and 25-18.

The Falcons used the excellent serving of Kelsi Blatchley, Alexis Carabetta and Olivia Genovese to vanquish the Greyhounds. The trio combined for an incredible 21 aces. St. Paul won the first set, then fought off Naugatuck in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. The Falcons were able to finish off the sweep and earn a berth in the NVL Tournament semifinals on Monday at Seymour Middle School.

St. Paul, seeded fourth, will play top-seeded Seymour around 7:15 p.m. The first semifinal pits second-seeded Kennedy against third-seeded Woodland and begins at 5 p.m.

The Eagles, who are not at their best in terms of physical health, were able to beat No. 7 Holy Cross 3-0 at Kennedy High School. Hannah West was one of the finishing end of many of Marin Delaney’s assists, and Arianna Padilla played excellent defense against the Crusaders.
