Logan Marchi will be the starting quarterback for East Tennessee State University when it opens the 2018 season on Saturday against Mars Hill.
ETSU head coach Randy Sanders made the announcement this past Sunday. The Buccaneers are a Division I Football Championship Subdivision team.
“Following [this past] Saturday’s practice I met with Logan and Austin (Herink), and told them about the decision,” Sanders said in a story posted on the ETSU football website. “Both quarterbacks put in a lot of work this spring and summer, and are leaders for our program. They both handled the competition like professionals and became better on and off the field because of it.”
Marchi, a former standout at St. Paul in Bristol, transferred from Temple University during the spring semester. This will be the second straight season where Marchi has entered as the starting quarterback. He was the top guy for Temple in 2017 and started the first seven games before an injury derailed his season. He threw for 1,658 yards and nine touchdowns in those seven games. Marchi threw for 767 yards in his first three games starting for the Owls, a school record. Marchi also attempted 109 passes before throwing his first interception, which tied a school record.
At St. Paul, Marchi had a stellar career and etched his name into the state record book in a multitude of passing categories. His former coach at St. Paul is thrilled for him.
“Huge shoutout to @lmarsh7 for being selected starting QB this week for ETSU’s opener,” Frank Stamilio wrote on Twitter. “Damn proud of this young man! #GoBucs #CTPRIDE #SPCHS”
Stamilio is the current quarterbacks coach at Southington High School. Marchi beat out Herink, who had been the starter for ETSU for most of the past three seasons, according to a story on the Johnson City Press website.
