BRISTOL’S SPRING ROUNDUP #1: St. Paul baseball wins opener

St. Paul baseball began defense of its Class S state championship with an 8-1 win over Waterbury Career Academy on Wednesday at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.

Jack Bator picked up his first varsity win, firing seven innings of one-run ball. Bator gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked on.
St. Paul’s offense started firing from the first batter. Julian Thayer smacked a triple, then Nick Morrell drove him in with a RBI double in the top of the first inning. Morrell later scored on an error.
The Falcons put up two more runs in the third inning. Morrell led off with a walk, then Andrew Owsianko was hit by a pitch. Morrell scored on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Greene, then Ben Lahey brought Owsianko home with a single, the first varsity RBI for Lahey.
Two more runs in the fourth made it 6-0, including the first varsity RBI for Thayer.
Chris Mills drove in a run in the fifth and seventh innings with a ground out and a single. 
Thayer was 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Morrell was 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Greene was 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
St. Paul’s game against Naugatuck was postponed. The Falcons are at Woodland on Monday.
Bristol Central: The Rams scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to take down Berlin 9-8 at Page Park on Wednesday.
Six different Central batters had two hits apiece. Dathan Hickey and Noah Plantamuro each had two hits, a RBI and two runs scored. Kenny Knox had two hits and a RBI while Alec DiLoreto had two hits, a RBI and one run scored. Kevin White and Mike Lemke had two hits and one run scored.
Bristol Eastern: The Lancers lost their first two games of the season to Wethersfield and Plainville.
Eastern went down 9-4 to Wethersfield at Page Park on Monday, then lost 4-3 at Plainville on Wednesday. A game against Hall (West Hartford) was postponed.


SOFTBALL
Bristol Eastern: The Lancers began the season with two blowout wins over Wethersfield and Plainville.
Eastern blew out Wethersfield 16-1 on Monday. Lauren Aparo collected five hits in her first varsity game. Mikayla Martin had four hits while Taylor Keegan had three hits in her first game. Makenzie Jankowski had three hits, Alyssa Hackling had two hits in her first game, and Erin Girard added two in her first game. Girard was also the winning pitcher, striking out 10 while giving up a single run in six innings.
In a 20-0 win over Plainville, Fitzsimons had four hits while Jankowski, Martin, Hackling and Girard added three each. Girard again picked up the win in the circle.
St. Paul: The Falcons shut out WCA 8-0 in their season opener Wednesday on Joan Joyce Field in the Municipal Stadium complex in Waterbury.
Alessandra Milardo fired a complete game with 13 strikeouts and gave up just two hits. She also had two hits at the plate. Janessa Gonzalez had three hits in her first varsity game while Brigid Johndrow added two.
The Falcons improved to 2-0 on Friday with a 21-2 rout of Plainville.
Bristol Central: Sarah Strielkauskas’ grand slam helped lead the Rams to a 9-2 win over New Britain on Monday.
Friday’s game against East Catholic was postponed.

GIRLS TENNIS
St. Paul: The Falcons began the season 2-0 with wins over Sacred Heart and Woodland.
St. Paul defeated Sacred Heart 4-3, then took down Woodland 5-2.
Bristol Eastern: The Lancers opened the season with a 5-2 win over Bristol Central and a 6-1 win over East Hartford.
Eastern swept doubles in both matchups.
Bristol Central: The Rams played only one match during the week because of postponements. Central lost 5-2 to Eastern.

BOYS LACROSSE
St. Paul (1-0) was scheduled to play Lewis Mills on Saturday at Bristol Central High School.
Bristol Central is 0-1 after last Saturday’s loss to St. Paul. 
Bristol Eastern blew out Wamogo 15-3 on Friday after losing its season opener to South Windsor on Tuesday.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Bristol: The co-op began the week with a 9-7 win over Holy Cross Monday, but lost to Southington on Wednesday.
St. Paul: The Falcons play on Wednesday at Wolcott in their first match since losing their season opener on April 1.

BOYS TENNIS
Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern: The Rams and Lancers both saw season-opening matches postponed, including one pitting both sides against each other.

GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Bristol Central: The Rams took down Newington behind three wins from Olivia Savino.
Hannah Jones won two events for Central, which also got individual wins from Adalia Malick, Joana Lalaj, Ashley Cummings and Shy-Ann Whitten. The Rams also captured two relays.

BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Bristol Central: Elijah Ortiz was the lone double winner for the Rams in a win over Newington.
Individual wins also came from Mike Guzman, Isaiah Miller, Nick Marcantonio, Hunter Peterson and Alrick Grant.
