Bristol Post 2 dug itself too deep an early hole and lost its American Legion Northeast Regional opener to Cumberland, R.I., by a score of 10-7 on Wednesday night at Muzzy Field.
Bristol must beat Brattleboro, Vt., in the second game of the morning doubleheader today to avoid elimination. The first game of the doubleheader is at 9:30.
Post 2 fell behind the Rhode Island champions 10-1 before scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning and two more in the ninth. Noah Cruz started the game and took the loss for Bristol.
Richard Lemke was the only Post 2 player with more than one hit. Bristol had seven hits in the game, and Lemke had two of them. Troy Micale (2 runs scored), Ben Mazzone (run scored), Chadd Richardson, Jaeden Rasmus (run scored) and Andrew Owsianko (2 runs scored) had one hit each. Nick Sassu drove in two runs, stole a base and scored a run.
Only three of Bristol’s runs were earned as Cumberland tallied seven errors. Post 2 had three errors in the game.
