The Waterbury Post 1 American Legion senior team completed its Southern Division Regional sweep of Hamden in a 5-1 win on Thursday afternoon at Bucks Hill Park.

Shea Dooley went the distance, giving up the single run on two hits. He struck out nine and walked four while throwing 112 pitches.

On offense, Tyriq Harris and Nate Zappone each had two hits. Zappone, Nelson Merced, Peyton Stephens and Justin Rodriguez each had a RBI. Harris, Zappone, Stephens, Rodriguez and Elias Torres each scored a run. Rodriguez, Stephens and Brendan Bessette had one hit each.
Hamden was the home team in the second game of the best-of-three series, and it struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Waterbury tied the game in the third on a squeeze bunt by Nate Zappone. The bunt brought home Elias Torres. Post 1 took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, then put the game away with two more in the seventh. Waterbury had seven hits in the game.
Second-seeded Post 1 will play in the Southern Division Super Regionals at Middletown’s Palmer Field, along with No. 1 Stamford, No. 3 Stratford and No. 4 Cheshire.
Waterbury improved its record to 24-2.
