BRISTOL’S WEEKLY ROUNDUP #2: Eastern jumps up to second in state wrestling ranks

Bristol Eastern found itself ranked second in the state entering this past week.

The Lancers didn’t disappoint, overpowering Plainville on the road by a score of 63-7. Eastern was scheduled to wrestle alongside Bristol Central on Saturday in the Bristol Central Invitational, but it was postponed due to impending wintry weather. The invitational has been rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 16 (Martin Luther King Day). According to Connecticut Wrestling Online, it’s the highest ranking achieved by the Lancers in this century.
Speaking of BC, the Rams handed Conard its first loss of the season by winning 42-39 on Wednesday. Damian Mahaffy was named “Animal” of the match by BC for his effort.
St. Paul also had an exciting win when it defeated Oxford 34-33 on criteria. The criteria was most matches won. The Falcons won seven overall while the Wolverines took six. The wins for the Falcons came from Matt Gray (220, forfeit), Adam Ward (113, decision), Victor Tu (120, pin), Elliott Garcia (132, decision), Tucker Raymond (138, pin), Johann Strasser (145, decision) and Jordan Silva (182, pin). Those results were posted on Connecticut Wrestling Online.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
No basketball team in the area has a better record than the St. Paul girls.
Well, it’s just not possible. With Friday’s win over Seymour and Kennedy’s loss to Holy Cross, the 7-0 Falcons are the only undefeated girls basketball team in the area. 
St. Paul defeated Seymour 55-46 at home. Janessa Gonzalez had a monster game for the Falcons with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
St. Paul got to 6-0 by knocking off Naugatuck 47-34 on the road on Tuesday. Brigid Johndrow led in scoring with 10 points. Teammate Jade Udoh scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter. 
Wnuk continues to shine: Bristol Eastern senior Diana Wnuk continues to fill up the stat sheet for her team.
Wnuk scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 75-70 loss at Middletown on Friday night.  

BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Paul claims a pair of wins: The Falcon boys also won twice this week. St. Paul knocked off Naugatuck 65-48 at home on Tuesday, then dispatched Seymour on the road on Friday. The Falcons improved to 4-1 with the victories, and they have won three straight games.
In the Naugatuck win, Austin Jones filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Donny Symes and Mike Palmieri each hit for 12 points. Matt Garry put up nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
On the road against Seymour, Palmieri and Matt Garry both scored 15 points to lead the way.
